Bardo Object 02 - PAN
A functional sculpture for the practice of gongfu tea, through an intersection of traditional tea practice, industrial fabrication, and contemporary object design. It is our interpretation of the traditional bamboo tea tray, developed in collaboration with a metal furniture and tea table design studio operating between Vietnam and New York.
Drawing inspiration from the spatial language of Bardo, the industrial venues of early ’90s East Coast rave culture, and the geometry of the Navajo cross, PAN explores the relationship between ritual, space, and utility. These distinct visual themes converge in the form of this tray, designed to accommodate the gestures and materials of tea preparation.
The surface is fabricated from laser-cut hot-rolled steel, sealed with polyurethane. A plexiglass basin beneath collects spent tea leaves and water during tea service.
