Believed to originate in the Heian era in between the 11th and 12th centuries, Kamon, or Japanese family crests, were symbols adopted by the various ruling clans to distinguish status and lineage. This started to change in the 12th century, where samurai used Kamons to identify their achievements on the battlefield and by the 19th century, families across the social stratus adopted the Kamon for their use as well.
